Analysing conventions of a music magazine front cover

Rock Sound

In today's lesson, i analysed the front cover conventions of a different genre music magazine - this time it was rock sound. In comparison to we heart pop which i previously analysed it is completely different altogether.

Like in we heart pop (pop) the genre is mentioned in the masthead rocksound (rock). For a rock magazine the masthead is quite basic and plain however it has a zigzag style circle around the R which means that the magazine can be represented just by that simple too (see cd in the bottom left corner, only the R is used to represent the magazine). The white of the masthead contrasts with the main image, it also has a black shadow effect behind and is overlayed over the image to really stand out. The main image is of the band bring me the horizon, they are positioned in a pyramid style way with the bands lead singer being the central focus. The image is balanced and symmetrical with two people either side of the lead. The low angle close up establishes that he is the lead singer. The lead singer is Oli Sykes who is quite a controversial person however this image makes him almost look calm however of great importance. The low angle makes him look down on the audience which is intimidating and makes him look powerful as he sternly looks down the camera lens and the tatoos on his neck plus his piercings show that he may be quite a rebellious rule breaker. Tha bands logo bmth is overlapped over the image and takes up the whole width of the magazine it is half way down the page. The font used in red with blood splatters around which connotes danger and could represent the band/ their personalities. The writing also overlaps his tattoos so the blood may stand for the pain of the ink. Accompanying the band it says 'exclusive' in contrasting black and yellow. words used on the cover such as exlcusive and 'never seen before' entices the reader and makes you want to read it as it gives the illusion that you wont be able to find the content anywhere else.

To the left of the of the magazine there was a free CD attached, a clever feature of this cover is that rock sound have embedded the cover into the magazine design however have made it more transparent so that it doesnt take anything away from the design. The free CD features bands and music which are genre appropriate further making the reader want to buy the magazine. In the bottom right corner is the typical conventions including web address, barcode etc the price is £3.99 and is wrote very small as it is more expensive than most magazines on the market. Above the price tag is another small puff to lure readers in, it promotes whats inside by saying you can win items so is an appealing offer to the audience. On this occassion you can win 'loads of abandoned ship gear'. I am unfamiliar with abandoned ship clothing but after looking at their website i can see it is a brand which would appeal to rock audience. The slang used including 'loads of gear' is informal and would appeal to buyers.

Finally running along the top of the magazine is a skyline offering a free poster package. Like we heart pop the artists chosen fit in with the target market and make people want to buy it, it is also a synergy as it could be promoting bands/musicians.
