Analysing conventions of a music magazine front cover

WE ❤ POP

Today in class, i had to analyse the front cover of we love pop magazine identifying key features and applying my knowledge as to why they were used.

We can clearly see from this cover that it is targeted at female readers probably from 12/13 - 17. The main colour used is a luminious pink colour which connotes girly things. To the left side is a 'fashion update' section which includes items such as gold sparkly shorts again for girls, also there are some pink creeper shoes, once more pink is used again to further show the gender of audience. The masthead is a simple font which uses images such as a heart instead of using the word, this again shows that it could possibly be for younger teens but again represents girliness, the masthead is also positioned in a speech bubbles os the use of geometric shapes makes it easy on the eye and fits in with the bubbliness of the magazine. Just above the masthead it says 'gossip, fashion, boys, uncensored' which again makes it clear that it is a magazine made for females.

At the bottom of the magazine is a sell line which features images of mainstream pop stars such as nicki minaj and harry styles, these are images of the posters which are inside so they use this to tell the audience whats inside and make them want to buy the mag to get the posters. The pop stars chosen are attractive to the audience which makes it more appealing for them e.g. nicki minaj is an idol for some teenage girls and harry styles is a teenage hearthrob, who they fancy.

The main image takes up about half of the cover, it is a photo of boy band the wanted with their trousers down. 'The wanted' is wrote in a large contrasting white font so that it really stands out, the anchorage text says 'all talk and no trousers' with no trousers underlined. This is a pun as the image shows them with their trousers down, the wanted are a boy band who have a strong female following so by featuring them in a sexy way with their trousers down will definetly attract their fans and make them want to read the article. Again representing them in this way with their trousers down shows that we heart pop is targetted at females. A small feature in the top left corner is Simon Cowell (puff), he has a speech bubble coming from his photo (repeatition of the speech bubble used in the masthead). The speech bubble says 'Pull your trousers up, stupid fools' this is in response to the main image and they have specifically chosen simon cowell as he is known for his high waister trousers. This tiny feature even shows how everything is linking back again to that main story as it it the prime focus even this tiny joke links back to it. Simon Cowell would also fit in well with the target audience as his programme the X Factor has produced many pop talents including boybands JLS, one direction and cher lloyd who all feature in this magazine inside.

The magazine also includes typical conventions such as barcodes, dates, web address and price. In this magazine the price is £2.99 which is quite expensive for young teenagers so it is wrote in a small font and not noticable.
